I was chatting with the owners of CrossFit Squamish (British Columbia) and I was curious to know what they substitute for running in the winter. They looked at me like I was growing an arm out of my head. Wuddya mean? We run in the snow!
Imagine that! What would it be like to moon-boot 400 meters through waist-deep snow, while being pursued by a pack of slavering wolves, and then have to do a bunch of overhead squats? Canadians really are crazy!
I have no doubt that if asked, TwinTown CrossFitters would run in the snow, but there are some lines you just can’t cross. If you make people run in the snow, where does it end? A workout with 400 squats? Oh wait…
But seriously, we don’t run in the snow because it’s too dangerous, but we do run in the cold. So until first snowfall, be sure to have layers when you come to the gym. We don’t have wolves in Minneapolis, but you may have to outrun a pack of slavering hipsters.

I don’t really care about the snow and cold. I like running in the winter, actually. It’s running in the dark I don’t like, and it doesn’t get light until after the early morning classes are over in the winter.
Facebook comments are back! Behave Craig Nelson!
Behave? Always.
You can run in the snow — I did it all the time at Cornell. You just have to know what kind of snow you're dealing with (fresh is best). And you just have to change your stride a bit and be much more focused. It's also amazingly peaceful because snow has this way of dampening sounds.
I love running in the winter. It's running in the dark I don't like, and it's dark out during our morning classes in the winter.
It's not the cold, it's not the ice, it's not the snow, it's not the dark that I dislike about winter running. It's the running.
