I’ve been doing a lot of yoga lately. It is very enjoyable, but I must admit I have a hard time gazing at myself in the mirror for prolonged periods of time. My mind wanders; I wish I could improve the view. The other people in the studio never seem to have this problem. What could be so fascinating?
When I first started yoga a few years ago my studio was a scary dump. There were no mirrors and almost no light but that meant there were no distractions. My proprioception got pretty good because I had to feel the position of my own body parts with no visual cues.
More importantly, I think the environment influenced the style of instruction. My yoga teacher back then didn’t have a mirror to rely on so she was very hands-on with corrections and adjustments. In a sense she functioned as my mirror.
That’s the problem with mirrors. Correcting your own form in a mirror only works if you already have the knowledge to distinguish good from bad technique. This is why getting feedback from a knowledgeable instructor is so valuable.
