Inflamed and Depressed

There is a lot of fascinating research into the systemic biology behind conditions that we normally think of as existing only in the mind. For instance, a recent study found a correlation between high levels of c-reactive protein and major depression. C-reactive protein is one of the most widely accepted markers of inflammation. The implication is that people with depressive disorders can get relief by managing inflammation, rather than by using anti-depressants.

I often work with clients who report feelings of euphoria after cutting glutens and other inflammatory foods from their diets. After reading this research I wonder if they’re actually euphoric. Maybe they’re just experiencing “normal” for the first time and mistake it for euphoria because it feels so much better than being a bloated, inflamed mess.
